April 30, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — Reports from the volatile Upper Nile State indicate that more fighting resumed yesterday at 2pm in Renk County, Northern part of Upper Nile state.
According to military sources of SPLA [in Opposition], which controls Amdalwich, their position was attacked by SPLA [Juba] and Sudanese rebels, SPLA-North, backing troops loyal to president Salva Kiir.
“Around 2:00pm,SPLA forces crossed to our territory and Launched an offensives against our forces in Northern Renk county.The purpose is to push back our forces from their initial bases.” said Dickson Gatluak, the SPLM [IO] military Press Assistant.
Mr. Gatluak believes that their forces have repulsed the government troops after six hours of constant fighting.
“The fighting is ongoing in the past six hours ago but our forces are fighting back the attackers where government troops are being retreated.” he said.
Gatluak reiterates that the government troops are attacking their fronts in Upper Nile and Unity states to gain more territories before the rainy season begins in one month.
“As they did yesterday in Bentiu to regain more ground before the rainy season by attacking our military base in Nhaila Diu and Guit, the same to what they are trying to do now in Renk in uppernile. Our forces will teach them a lesson which they would not forget in their life time.” Gatluak said.
The Military spokesman for SPLA, Juba faction, Col. Philip Aguer, has confirmed the recent fighting in Baliet and other parts of Upper Nile, however, he is yet to response to the current fighting in Renk County.
Renk is one of the counties in Upper Nile state that has been co-inhabited by the two warring parties for the last one and half year.
While the government controls the headquarters of some of the counties, the Opposition controls other towns and interiors of the counties.
Two platoons of government soldiers defected from Renk County two weeks ago and joined the rebels in Amdalwich.
In other reports, President Salva Kiir has convened the Chollo King and elders to play a role in persuading the warlord Maj. Gen. Johnson Olony who took control of Malakal town and dismantled the government headquarters.
While some government officials, including the deputy governor, remain hiding in Melut, others remain in UNMISS compound.
During his yesterday meeting with President Salva Kiir, Governor Simon Kun Puoch briefed the president, and the public saying that the situation in Malakal is now returning to normal.
