Lol is one of the 21 colonial districts which were recently proposed at capacity of states by the leadership of SPLM/SPLA [IO] under Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

According to SPLM/SPLA [IO], the 21 federal states will be nationally approved and implemented after the formation of Transitional Government of National Unity.

Although Juba fights in defense of its centralized system of governance, which entails maintaining fewer states and counties, many appointed and elected IO military governors are establishing counties and leadership structures for their respective states.
